remédiation

« And in the process that film is engaging in a particular form of intermediality that I would like to call remediation. If intermediality is in general the study of the relationships of one media form to others, the particular relationship I want to look at is one in which homage and rivalry are combined. In a remediating relationship, both new forms and older forms are engaged in kind of struggle for cultural acceptance and recognition. And in this struggle, the contested field becomes the construction of the real or of the authentic. The question becomes: “which media form can offer the viewer an experience that she finds more satisfying”, which typically in our culture is translated into terms of the authentic or the real. »
