intertextualité« The other keyword of my title, intermediality, refers of course to intertextuality transgressing media borders. So we can say that if multimodality more penetratingly characterizes modern culture, intermediality characterizes the formations of meaning in this multi-modal cultural space. It’s a concept relevant to production, but also to distribution and reception of cultural texts. Intermediality, then, is about the relationships between always already multi-modal symbolic modes in always already multi-modal cultures. I think that the term intermediality is a healthy reminder of the fact that different forms of representation cannot be separated from each other, neither on the level of individual consciousness or on the level of the entire culture. On the contrary, these different forms have an effect on each other at all times, so that we can say that the forms of representation in use at a given time form a certain network, or field, that’s constructed from mutual differences and similarities. » |
