« One consequence of seeing analog cinema as a closed, coherent system is that cinema can serve as an unacknowledged foundation and origin for digital cinema. This leads to what I will call fatal repetition — a sense of the inevitability of certain forms of closure and systematization, a sense of the end as both historical completion and destruction. In the second section, I discuss Sakaguchi‘s film Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (2001) as an example of fatal repetition. »
