remédiation« If a media can incorporate or subsume all others, can it also mediate all their relations? What kind of synthesis is this, if a synthesis at all? Is the result just a giant, all-crunching, ever-expanding machine — like those eclectic conglomerates that appear at the close of so many Otomo Katsuhiro productions (such as Akira or Roujin Z) with their apparently unmediated bits and pieces folded into a slow motion implosion? Or are new media able to mediate these heterogeneous elements? These questions about media and mediation deserve much more attention. Are new media the ultimate Hegelian machinery of omni-mediation? [...] But, if you capture indexical cinema, do you also capture its contact with the real? Have you excised or transformed it, or you just farther away from it? Is this mediation? » |
